Bronx DA calls for grand jury in fatal NYPD shooting

A Bronx grand jury will consider whether to bring criminal charges against the NYPD sergeant who fatally shot a 66-year-old bat-wielding woman, the borough’s district attorney announced Monday. Bronx DA Darcel Clark said her office will be presenting the case involving police Sgt. Hugh Barry, who shot dead schizophrenic Deborah Danner in her apartment Oct. 18. “I have pledged to the people of the Bronx to conduct a thorough, fair investigation into this matter, and I believe that presenting the evidence to a grand jury will best accomplish that goal,” Clark said in a statement. “It is important to determine exactly what happened in this tragic incident.” Danner was naked and carrying scissors when cops were called to her apartment. Barry got her to put down her scissors, but she then grabbed a bat and rushed him, authorities have said. Both Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill have questioned Barry’s actions. Among the issues are why he didn’t use his stun gun to try to stop her first. Barry’s police union has defended him, saying he feared for his life at the time.
